On the Road with TLTI

In the winter, the Roads division works hard to ensure safe driving conditions by plowing and sanding the municipal roads. You can help keep things running smoothly and efficiently. Here’s how…

1. Snow on Roadways
Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, shovelling, blowing, or plowing snow onto or across a roadway is illegal. It’s also very dangerous and can cause oncoming vehicles to lose control. Please use caution when clearing your driveway, and always be aware of the traffic around you.

2. Winter Parking
The Winter Parking Bylaw is in effect. To allow operators to maintain roads safely, motor vehicles may not be parked on any roads, streets, sidewalks, or Township-owned parking lots within the municipality between 12:00 and 7:00 a.m. from December 1 to March 31. Also, please refrain from parking on the roads, streets or sidewalks during or immediately following a snowfall. Plow operators cannot do their job properly if vehicles are parked in the way.

3. Protect Your Mailbox
It’s your responsibility to keep the area around your mailbox clear of snow. Most times, when mailboxes get damaged, it’s because plowed snow accumulates in front of them, causing increased weight and pressure against them over the course of the winter. If your mailbox has been damaged, please contact the Roads Department so we can arrange an inspection and a course of action.

4. Driving
When approaching a plow, reduce speed, keep your headlights on low, and stay to the right. If driving behind a snowplow, keep a safe distance and remember the operator may need to back up. If you can't see the mirrors, they can't see you!
