February 11, 2025 – Monique Antoine-Hartley Appointed Councillor – Ward 2
(Lansdowne) – During a meeting on February 10, 2025, Council for the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands appointed Monique Antoine-Hartley as new Councillor - Ward 2, following candidate interviews.
A vacancy on Council was created by the retirement of Mark Jamison on December 31, 2024. Mr. Jamison was first elected as Councillor – Ward 2 in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022.
According to the provisions of the Municipal Act, 2001, when a vacancy occurs, council must either hold a by-election or appoint someone willing to serve. Township Council opted to seek applications from residents interested in the position. Applications were accepted from January 23, 2025, to February 5, 2025, during which time five area residents submitted their names for consideration. Each applicant was interviewed by Council during the February 10th meeting and the successful candidate was chosen by Council.
Councillor Antoine-Hartley has spent her life in Township and is a resident of Seeley’s Bay. In addition to having a 38-year career as an educator, she is actively involved in the community through volunteering with many area organizations and service groups.
Mayor Smith-Gatcke stated “On behalf of Council, I wish to welcome Councillor Antoine-Hartley and am looking forward to working with her.” Mayor Smith-Gatcke continued "I also wish to convey my thanks to the four other applicants who came forward and were ready to serve our Council. Their experience and commitment to our community is truly impressive."
