Tell us about yourself! Hobbies? Fun facts? How did you get started?
I am a retired dairy farmer whose family has made maple syrup since the mid 1800s. I started the business to be “busy” in my retirement. I am currently seeking a partner to train and mentor so that at some point the business can continue long after I am gone. That failing, I am dedicated to put the sugar bush in a land trust. There is a lot of potential for this industry in Leeds and the Thousand Islands. It fits in with other initiatives and businesses hoping to preserve the natural beauty of the region.
Define your business in your own words.
Simply put: the production of maple syrup. Currently it is being sold on site as well as in select grocery stores. I have also started to fill small containers to be used as favors for weddings and gifts for guests to the area. My interest is moving beyond the traditional sales avenues and finding unique ways of marketing. I like to colour outside of the lines.
What business achievement are you most proud of?
I cannot pick just one. Being selected as “Sugar Maker of the Year for 2018.” Hosting a tapping out party that was the best attended ever for the Lanark & District Maple Syrup Produces Association. And a promotional video that was marketed to millions of Europeans.
Why did you choose Leeds and the Thousand Islands to start your business?
My family has been here for seven generations. I wanted to look for creative ways to generate a living from the farm. I wanted to prove that agriculture is a viable way to earn a living. I would like to leave the farm better then when I took it over.
What words would you use to describe Leeds and the Thousand Islands?
Natural beauty, accessible wilderness.
Provide a message to your future guests!
