Tell us about yourself! Hobbies? Fun facts? How did you get started?
I've been on the farm my entire life. I've always been closely involved in raising the animals and gardening. Starting Firelight Fare was an effort to start promoting more Farm to Table options for our community. I wanted to be able to sell direct to customers instead of always selling through an auction, etc. Besides farming, I enjoy making things out of stuff I find in nature (grapevine, etc) and I make wood crafts.
Define your business in your own words.
We raise high quality meats and vegetables. I currently sell duck, quail, rabbit, chicken and beef. Hopefully in the future we will also be offering lamb and goat. We have eggs as well. We raise everything in a forage-based system where the animals get outside and eat grass as much as possible. I grow vegetables in the summer, specializing in salad greens. We are looking at options for renting a commercial kitchen, so we will also be able to offer value added foods from things produced at our farm. I want to be able to make foods with minimal preservatives, etc. We sell composted manure in the spring and summer, and I love hearing back from customers about how much better their garden turned out after using our natural product instead of the store-bought stuff they used to use.
What business achievement are you most proud of?
I'm happy when the customers are happy.
Why did you choose Leeds and the Thousand Islands to start your business?
Because I have always lived here so it made sense.
What words would you use to describe Leeds and the Thousand Islands?
